What is TRL?

Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) are a 9-level scale originally developed by NASA and adopted by the European Commission to measure how mature a technology is. The scale runs from basic research (TRL 1) to a fully proven system in operation (TRL 9).

For AI projects, TRL provides a shared language between innovators, investors, and delivery teams to describe exactly where a project stands and what evidence exists for its viability.

AstroLab typically accelerates projects from TRL 3–4 to TRL 6–7. Our delivered pilots have achieved TRL 5 through TRL 7, with functional prototypes demonstrated in relevant and operational environments. What is a Test Bed?
A Test Bed is a controlled environment where companies can develop, test, and validate new technologies before full market deployment. AstroLab is part of the Portuguese National Network of Test Beds (Hub #11056), providing dedicated AI infrastructure, expert guidance, and structured delivery methodology to accelerate projects from concept to production-ready systems. The Test Bed model allows companies to reduce risk, access specialised resources, and validate their AI solutions in a supported environment before scaling.
What types of AI projects does AstroLab deliver?
We deliver applied AI projects: document intelligence, workflow automation, predictive systems, computer vision, NLP/NLU, voice AI, recommendation engines, RAG systems, and multi-modal AI. We do not deliver pure research or SaaS products. We build operational systems around your specific workflows and data.
How long does a typical project take?
Most projects run 12–24 weeks from Discovery to Ship. A focused pilot can be delivered in 10–14 weeks. Complex enterprise deployments may extend to 6+ months. We scope precisely before committing to timelines.
What does it cost?
Projects are scoped individually. A typical pilot engagement starts at €10K. Full production deployments are priced based on complexity, data requirements, and integration scope. We provide fixed-price quotes after the Scoping phase.
Do we need to have data ready before engaging?
No. The Discovery phase includes a data landscape review. We help you identify what data exists, what is usable, what needs preparation, and what governance is required. Many projects begin with imperfect data and improve iteratively.
What happens after delivery?
Every project includes 30 days of post-launch support, full documentation, and operational handover. We train your team to maintain and evolve the system. Optional ongoing support packages are available for monitoring, model updates, and feature extensions.
